World Disco Soup Day

World Disco Soup Day

29/4/2017

This year the Slow Food Youth Network has decided to organize the first Global Disco Soup Day. While in some parts of the world people suffer from hunger, one third of the food intended for human consumption is being thrown away – that’s 1.3 billion of tons of food in the bin every year. It’s clear we have a huge challenge ahead of us. Time for action!
We are inviting everyone from the Slow Food Youth Network and beyond to start their own Disco Soup event on April 29th 2017. Join us and fill bellies instead of bins!
What is Disco Soup?
Disco Soup started 5 years ago as Schnippeldisko in Berlin, Germany, a “protest soup” against food waste that fed 8000 people. Throughout the food system there’s an enormous amount of perfectly good food being wasted; whether it’s vegetables left to rot in the fields, food discarded by supermarkets or consumers not using what they buy. Disco Soup aims to raise awareness of this global problem by showing that all this “waste” is actually perfectly edible, even it requires a little effort.
All you need to do is get in touch with farmers, wholesalers, markets, shops and supermarkets to see if they can donate some food instead of throwing it away. Then, with some tables, tools and at least one big pan you’ve got a Disco Soup going!

New Foodrevolution
Hunger and obesity, waste and water scarcity food production in 2017 is plagued with contradictions and often seems to lag behind the times. We urgently need to jumpstart a revolution in the way we produce and consume food so that we can feed the world’s

population without leaving people behind, neglecting nutrition, or degrading the planet. This event will showcase young entrepreneurs and mission-driven leaders who are working to fix the food and agriculture system while creating the jobs and business opportunities of tomorrow.

Speakers include Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank CEO; Jehiel Oliver, founder and CEO of Hello Tractor (shared tractor service by SMS in Nigeria and Kenya); Annie Ryu, founder and CEO of the Jackfruit Company (Indian farmers supplying a meat alternative in US market);  Nataliey Bitature, founder and COO of Musana Carts (solar powered food carts providing safe food and improved livelihoods in Kampala, Uganda);  Kees Aarts, founder and CEO of Protix (producing sustainable protein from insects, enabling people to get nutrition without depleting the planet), and Yoav Zeif, president of Americas Division at Netafim (climate-smart drip irrigation pioneered in Israel, spreading to other regions).k hier om te bewerken.

Insects and Society

No life on Earth without insects! Insects do not only provide the conditions for life on this planet but they are also an profound source of inspiration for people. Insects are delicious, important, beautiful, useful and provide important ecosystem services. What else do we want?

From 11 January till 15 March 2017 the lecture series Insects and Society will be organised in the Forum building on Wageningen Campus.
This lecture series provides a wide view of the role of insects in society with lecture by specialists at the boundaries of nutrition, culture, technical sciences, agriculture and entomology. There are ample opportunities to enjoy insects, if only we have an open mind for this. Insects can transmit deadly diseases but also help solving murders. Insects provide inspiration to artists, as well as the designers of men’s toilets. These and many more topics feature in Insects and Society.
